“Chai Tea French toast for breakfast!!” Music to my ears.
This vegan spin on classic breakfast is something I’ve been meaning to write up for a while now. There are a couple of different ways I like to make my french toast to make sure it never gets to be boring. But here’s how it all started:
Chai Tea French Toast Inspiration
Before I was eating a plant-based diet (in the early 2000’s), my favorite place was an adorable restaurant in Chicago called Orange.
It was my restaurant obsession through college and the best thing to order was their famous orange coffee (of course), the chai tea french toast, and frushi.
Fruit sushi… I know, I know. It is as amazing as it sounds.
The chai tea french toast on Orange’s menu cheers, “ricotta-stuffed chai-tea battered brioche/ caramelized apples/ honey/ chai tea cream reduction.”
So of course, I had to revisit this treasure from my past and veganize it.
Complicated or Simple…Up to You.
Sometimes I go all the way and the full Chai Tea French Toast stuffed with Kite Hill Ricotta, caramelized apples, and the chai cream reduction.
Sometimes it’s even fancier when the bread I use is homemade butternut squash sourdough with cranberries and pecans. What?!?
I highly recommend getting crazy in your bread choices.
Other times, I just want breakfast now, so I just make the batter, coat the bread, fry it, and eat it with no fancy additions.
Just a classic vegan french toast.
It’s all about balance. So don’t get intimidated by the stuffed cheese, apples, or reduction.
It’s french toast. Make it simple.
Chai Tea French Toast Made 2-Ways
Sometimes I make my french toast batter with Follow Your Heart’s Vegan Egg and sometimes I make it with garbanzo bean flour.
One or the other. They are both delicious to me. It really depends on what I have on hand at the time.
In both of these recipes, I use iced chai tea instead of water to make the batter.
The Vegan Egg batter version tends to be a bit squisher of a toast, and the garbanzo bean flour batter stays firmer when cooked, and softens more with the addition of butter and syrup.
And both are absolutely delicious.
